World War 2: an obsession
Australian Sgt Leonard Siffleet about to be beheaded by a Japanese officer. New Guinea, Oct 24, 1943 Vice-Admiral Michiaki Kamada of the Imperial Japanese Navy ordered Stiffleet to be executed after they had been captured by Partisan natives and handed over to the Japanese. Stiffleet was part of a small commando unit tasked with coast watching and reporting back Japanese ship & troop movements.  The photograph of Siffleet’s execution was discovered on the body of a dead Japanese major near Hollandia by American troops in April 1944. It is believed to be the only surviving depiction of a western prisoner of war being executed by a Japanese soldier.
